While Gord Downie was on stage I was getting some water and ran into James Stevenson by the food carts. I had a quick chat with him, mentioning that I had seen the band the night before. He's quite a stand up guy, glad to see him in the band. During the Current Swell set we saw the Cult arrive to the venue via helicopter. Nothing like making an entrance like rock stars!
I got up to the front for the Cult's set and watched the setup. As it was a festival time was of the essence. All set-up had to be done quickly. Unfortunately, due to some delays the Cult's set didn't start until about 7:10. I found out later that the delay cost us a song (Sun King). Not sure what the problem was, but it looked like it had to do with visibility due to the sun.
The thing about a festival like this was that the crowd was much younger than the usual nightclub shows I've been to. The crowd was also much bigger. They said there was about 7,000 there for the day! The young crowd was very energetic with a lot of crowd surfing taking place. It was funny to see the use of technology as a few of the crowd surfers used their phones or GoPros to film their antics.
At two points during the set a "hose girl" would come out into the trench and hose down the crowd. It was very hot so this was appreciated. I noticed that they had been doing this all day long. Highlight for me for this set was Sanctuary. So much energy, the young crowd took this to the next level.
As far as the festival itself. Very well run. The water line up was long, but everything else was very good. Lots of great food carts. No problems with alcohol, and great to see so many families enjoying this.
