The National, Richmond, VA. - what a cool venue to see a band. A renovated 1920's
theatre - grand architecture throughout, multiple bars and lounges, private VIP
balconies on the sides, standard VIP section with tables on the upper level,
general admission seating on the upper level, then standing GA throughout the
lower level. My only complaint was with the sound from my location. Standing 2nd
"row" between Ian and Billy, we had a bad mix - Billy's amps were directed in our
face (not a problem if you like a lot of gtr) but the mains were going over our
heads, so were lacking some serious vocals. I'm sure it was fine futher in the
back, but in my opinion The National needs to wrap their mains a little more to
point towards the crowd directly in front of the stage. The Norva (in Norfolk,
VA), a similar venue, has their mains mounted so as to catch the audience in the
front. The Norva and The National are run by the same people so I'm surprised
they haven't figured that
With no opening band, The Cult came on at 9:15 pm with a ton of energy that
lasted the entire night. Billy gave us multiple windmills and didn't miss a lick.
John was beatin' the drums so hard he was knocking them over. Chris' thumping
bass and Mike's rock solid guitar help set up Ian's command of the stage. It was
great to hear the rare songs from Love. The video screen was quite a treat. I
was pleased to walk away with 3 of Billy's guitar picks, 1 of Chris', Billy's set
list, one of the maroon/yellow Indian Love Live concert shirts, some great photos,
and yet another awesome Cult concert experience. CFFC!
