Portland, Oregon, Roseland Theater
Opening Band: The Cliks
I am still reeling the morning after the Portland, OR show. I was turned on to the Cult in the late
80s but never really latched onto them until the mid to late 90s. First Cult show. Very initmate
setting. The boys ROCKED. Both Ian and Billy went far beyond the call of duty. Ian sang with soul
and Billy threw in some extra solos. I forget which song but their communication was a little off
and billy played a little longer than usual on a solo and ian sang a couple words over the guitar.
Billy only yelled at his tech once. That was a thrill to witness, since I've read much about his tech
problems. Not much of a problem though. Quickly resolved. Ian talked between almost every song,
which was nice to hear. He spoke French once. He talked with a thick British accent and talked like
us stupid Americans.
I cannot recall the exact set list, but it was similar to the recent shows. Three song encore ending
with LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE!!! YES! Every song was solid. Billy was on. The rythym section was
awesome. My two highlights were Pheonix and Savages!!!! The new CD is wonderful. Jim appeared only
a couple of times, so I think Ian is back. I saw him with Ray and Robby in 2002. He filled Jim's shoes
fo sho.
I am so happy to have witnessed Billy and his magic, since they are both getting older. But if last
night was any indication, these guys can go on for another decade. Thanks for the website, Dude.
You are my source of info for the band.
Peace.
Jeff.
I was at the show last night. They sounded amazing and I don't know if I
have ever seen them tighter. This band is phenominal, particularly the
drummer - adding so much.
Billy was in great spirits and smiling, whilst Ian was being a bit of a
grump, chastising people who were sitting and complaining about "having to
play Fire Woman". Just dont play it if you don't want to! He was also
mumbling about Darfur, the Black Panthers and a bunch of other things I
could barely hear.

I have been lucky enough to see the Cult 3 times in the past 4 months. This
show was thee BEST! Ian's vocals were strong and well rested. Billy's guitar
was without any percieved problems ( ie; he seemed to be happy with them ).
A little different setlist than the SF show which was a nice change of pace.
Adding some older different tunes was a bonus for me. It was a long while
since me and my Bro' had seen a show together so this only added to the feel
good. Ian said that it had been a long time since they had been to Portland
and promised to be back soon. I will be looking forward to that! Ian talked
about Angela Davis and her association with the Black Panthers and went on
to say Sweet Soul Sister was written about her. Cool bit of song history
there.
