Opening For: The Who

Well, me and my wife weren't quite a The Cult fan, but since two weeks that changed rapidly. We went to see The Who in Rotterdam and were impressed by openers The Cult. We liked the songs although the only song I knew was She Sells Sanctuary. We bought a The Cult compilation disc called Pure Cult and we loved it, played it a lot the last weeks. We decided to go see The Who/The Cult again in Oberhausen Germany, because we lived near the German border. When the doors opened my wife bought a The Cult Electric T-shirt.

The Cult were really in a better mood then in Rotterdam. They opened with Sweet Soul Sister, wich was suprising for us, because we read that they usually start with with Lil' Devil, but that one was skipped this night. Billy Duffy was happy to see that some of the crowd (including us) knew the lines. Then they played Fire Woman. Ian was having a good time and was talking (or attempting to) German a lot. He said something about David Bowie and Iggy Pop being in Berlin and about the novel/film Cristian F. He was really trying to lift up the crowd by imitating people that looked like they're not having fun. He gave some guy that pointed at his The Who ticket (indicating that he ONLY was there to see The Who) a hard time. Ian was joking about this guy's 'negative energy surounding him.' After Wild Flower they played a new song from the upcoming album. It's callled I Assasin, it sounded real nice! Promsing for the new album in september! To our suprise they played Edie (non-acoustic), it was great because they didn't do that one in Rotterdam. They went on with Rain, a personal favorite of myself, Ian voice was very strong on that one.

By the time they wanted to start Rise, Billy Duffy had some problems with his guitar wires, but Ian and Duffy made a lot of jokes about it and continued. After Rise, a song we didn't know yet, they played She Sells Sanctuary. I thought that was the last song, but fortunately they squeezed one more song in and ended with the great Love Removal Machine. Overal a great gig for us, because this time we knew both bands well and loved every minute. No doubt we will dig up The Cult studio albums in the near future.

Greetings,

Koos
